Bonnethead sharks, one of the smallest members of the hammerhead shark family Sphyrnidae, have a special place in my heart. For many years, the avatar I used for science communication efforts, including posts on this blog, was a picture of me with a bonnethead.

Disappearing oceanic whitetip shark warrant listing as 'threatened'on the US Endangered Species Act

  • - Popualtion has declined 80-90 per cent in the Pacific ocean since the 1990s, and 50-85 per cent in the Atlantic Ocean since the 1950s
  • - National Marine Service said they are likely to become endangered 
  • - Conservation group Defenders of Wildlife called on the government to list them
